Correlation and regression analysis are appropriate procedures here. Case 3 involves both quantitative and qualitative independent variables. This case is of primary Page 8 concern for the present discussion, and two alternate (though statistically similar) procedures are available for analyzing situations which meet this condition. They are analysis of covariance and regression analysis with dummy variables. It is analysis of covariance which is of concern in the discussion to follow. Analysis of covariance is a special case of the linear model, just as are the regression and the analysis of variance models.

They investigated the relationship between a specific aspect of architectural design (method of aerial partitioning) and the perception of crowding. The setting for the research was the waiting area in a southern California office of the Division of Motor Vehicles. Three experimental trials were conducted on successive Mondays, each employing one of three levels of partitioning. The first level involved minimal partitioning in which the floor area was uncluttered and persons waiting for service could form a line in any manner they chose.

However, primary consideration is given to the experimental perspective, which includes those cases, both observational and experimental, in which primary interest is in the effect of a single qualitative independent variable on the dependent variable and the covariates are considered nuisance variables. (It is noted that in this and subsequent sections of this paper a basic knowledge of analysis of variance and regression analysis is assumed. Also, all discussion of experimental designs that follows considers only fixed effects models.
